Planting information
It likes a climate with high temperature and sufficient sunshine, and is suitable for planting from March to September. The soil should be sandy loam or clay loam with deep soil and good drainage, with a pH value of 5.5 - 6.5.
To ensure rapid and consistent seed germination, soak the seeds for 24 hours and then germinate at 25 - 30°C. It takes about 10 days for seeds to germinate; when the seedlings grow to 3-4 true leaves, they can be transplanted. It takes about 35-40 days from sowing to planting.
Carry out the first top dressing 10 days after planting. In the future, top-dressing will be done every 2-3 weeks, for a total of 4-6 times throughout the plant; approximately 150 grams of compound fertilizer (nitrogen: phosphorus: potassium: magnesium = 12:12:17:2) will be applied to each plant each time. During the harvest period, foliar fertilizer can be added once or twice to help extend the harvest period and increase yield.
When the main vine grows to 1 meter, you can leave an extra thick side vine for the shed. If there are too many male and female flowers, they can be removed appropriately to control fruit growth. At the same time, deformed fruits and thin branches need to be thinned out to reduce nutrient consumption and facilitate ventilation.
When the female flowers wither and the young fruits (about the size of a finger) form, they should be bagged immediately to prevent insect damage and make the bitter melon pure white and bright in color.
About 50-60 days after planting, the fruit can be harvested when the nodular grains and rib protrusions are full and the peel is smooth. The harvesting period can last up to three months. During high-temperature periods, it is advisable to harvest the fruits when they are 7-8 years old to slow down the rate of post-ripening.
