About Sunflowers

Sunflower seeds thrive in a slightly moist environment and do not require excessive water or fertilizer during germination. Typically, seeds will sprout within 3 to 4 weeks.

How to Grow Sunflowers

When to Plant Sunflowers

Sunflower seeds should be sown directly into the garden or outdoor containers after the risk of spring frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 50°F (10°C).

• In the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, and Mexico, this is usually between April and mid-June.

• In the South, planting can begin as early as mid-March or early April.

Sunflowers prefer not to have their roots disturbed, so direct sowing is recommended over transplanting.

Planting Sunflower Seeds

1. Depth and Spacing: Plant seeds 1 to 1½ inches deep and about 6 inches apart. For multiple seeds, thin them to the strongest plants when they reach 6 inches tall.

2. Row Spacing: Space rows about 30 inches apart (closer for smaller varieties).

3. Fertilizer: A light application of fertilizer at planting time encourages strong root growth, helping plants withstand wind.

4. Staggered Planting: To enjoy continuous blooms, stagger plantings over 5 to 6 weeks.

5. Bird Protection: If birds disturb the seeds, cover the planted area with netting until germination.
