Grown for their tender, edible flower buds

Smooth, non-thorny artichokes are a farmer's favorite

Very cold tolerant. Large glossy Artichokes with no thorns. Its smoothness makes it a favorite of farmers. Produces over a long time. In warm areas, such as California, treated as a perennial and left for 6 to 7 years until they need to be divided. In colder regions, Artichokes should be treated as annuals as the roots will die with prolonged freezing.

Plants can grow up to 6 feet in the first year.  Although heads can be harvested the first year, it is advised that the plants be cut back to allow for much greater yields during the following years. It takes an average of 150 days to harvest. The beautiful plants that have an upright stem with serrated leaves need a lot of space. If the fruits are not harvested, they form into beautiful blue flowers.

Artichoke Seed Planting Information:

Artichokes do best in cool weather and are usually planted indoors and transplanted outdoors. They grow best in humid areas where temperatures remain below 50 F for a long time. Start seeds indoors for 6 to 8 weeks before setting them outdoors. Plants require 50 F to 70 F temperatures to induce budding. Spring planting should occur as soon as soil can be worked and after the last frost, and fall planting done in September, October, and November for spring harvest. When seedlings are 2" to 4" tall, transplant them into larger pots so roots can grow properly. Protect the plants from frost. Plants become less productive in the 5th and 6th year and new plants should be grown. Plants can grow 3 to 5 ft tall.

Soil Requirements:
Requires fertile soil in a well-drained location in the garden. Apply much grass clippings, or straw around the base of the plant.

Water Requirements:
Keep seedlings and transplants consistently moist. Water well during dry and hot spells.

Fertilizer Requirements:
Use RootBlast, Vegetable Alive, and Slow Release Fertilizer when transplanting outdoors. Periodically apply Miracle Gro.

Harvest Tips:
Cut the edible flower buds when they are 3 to 4" in diameter. After harvesting, cut the plant back one-third to encourage new buds to form.
